design research for designers

I teach Design Research at California College of the Arts. My course is required for sophomores in the Interaction Design program, one of the most highly regarded design programs in the country.

A qualitative research synthesis workshop.

Methods taught include: interviewing skills, ethnographic research, survey design, participant screening, recruiting, and participatory/co-design. I teach students how to synthesize the data they collect by using frameworks such as mental models and ecosystem maps. The overarching theme of this course is creating empathy for the people who use the products and services we build.

Generating design opportunities based on research.
